Paqpaqli: Magistrate Lia to consider recusal

Magistrate Nadine Lia might abstain from the compilation of evidence into the 2015 Paqpaqli għall-Istrina. The magistrate is to decree in chambers on the matter, after she declared that she is acquainted to one of the persons charged.

Paul Bailey, the owner and driver of a Porsche Spyder sports car is facing criminal proceedings after it crashed into the crowd during the motorshow event in aid of annual fundraising marathon l-Istrina in October 2015. Several people were injured. Thirteen former members of the organising committee were also accused of responsibility.

Magistrate Lia was appointed to the case, after former Magistrate Aaron Bugeja was appointed Judge. In court, Magistrate Lia declared that she was socially acquainted to one of the individuals who stand accused.

Six separate lawsuits were filed seeking damages. 23 individuals were injured during this incident. The lawsuits were dropped after receiving a compensation.

In November 2018, the defence counsel asked why no criminal proceedings were instituted against those individuals who designed the track for the event.
