In 2017, 7,523 people were admitted to Mater Dei Hospital, in 2018 this number increased to 8,797 and in 2019, 12,761 third-country nationals were admitted at Mater Dei Hospital.

This data was confirmed by Health Minister Chris Fearne after statistics were tabled in Parliament.

Replying to questions by PN MP Ivan Bartolo, Fearne said that each and every foreigner is asked to pay for the medical treatment received at Mater Dei Hospital if the person does not qualify for free medical care.

In 2004 a legal notice was published which explained who are the individuals who could benefit from free medical care. The legal notice had also included the price list of the different medical treatments.

Between 2017 and 2019, 32,700 individuals from European Union member states were hospitalized at Mater Dei.
