A new lighting system for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica dome in Valletta has been officially inaugurated, the government said on Sunday.

The lighting system which is part of a restoration project on the exterior of the dome, includes 139 LED lights specifically for the dome and roof of this Church. The inauguration was presided over by Capital Projects Minister Ian Borg.

The project is part of a €700,000 investment being led by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, which also includes Our Lady of Pilar Church and St Augustine’s Church.

Minister Borg noted that the project was a testimony of the efforts undertaken to embellish and carry out restoration works on one of the most important icons on Malta’s landscape.

“This investment is being translated into a better aesthetic which properly honours our capital city. This is an intervention among many which prioritise the conservation of our country’s architectural heritage,” he said.

He noted that this investment was not only limited to the dome itself but also contributed to the touristic product and to the Valletta community and residents who view the Basilica as a point of reference.
