“The publication of proposals for the Budget by the Opposition is symptomatic of a healthy democratic society where social dialogue is alive and well”. The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry (Malta Chamber), President David Xuereb said this during a meeting with the leader of the Opposition Adrian Delia on Thursday.
Xuereb stated that the current economic situation is positive but cannot be taken for granted.
The Malta Chamber president also noted the amount of similarities between the document presented by the Malta Chamber and that compiled by the Opposition. However, the Malta Chamber does not agree with a number of proposals made by the Opposition such as compulsory memberships to unions by employees. The Malta Chamber is also against the proposed obligation for all employers to submit electronic copies of all contracts of employment contracts and the possibility for parents to take accumulated sick leave over the past six years to care for their children or elderly parents.
Amongst the proposals made by the Malta Chamber, are the need for solution of mass transportation, and the reform of the Rent Law. They also expressed the need for a better quality within the Building and Construction industry, the restoration of the Financial sector reputation and the need to increase expenditure in research, development and innovation.
