Open Day at MUŻA and Grand Master’s Palace

On Saturday 2nd November from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (last admission 4.30 pm) , Heritage Malta is inviting the public to visit the National-Community art museum MUŻA and the Grand Master’s Palace, both in Valletta, during an Open Day.

MUŻA is housed within the 450-year-old building of the Auberge d’Italie. A visit to this museum offers the opportunity to appreciate the meticulous restoration that was undertaken to give life back to this architectural gem. Moreover, one can explore the artistic collections which are inspired by four main themes, being The Mediterranean, Europe, Empire and The Artist. Key works include those by Southern Italian artist Mattia Preti, British 20th century artist Victor Pasmore and Malta’s own top 20th century sculptor Antonio Sciortino.

Ever since its construction by the Order of St John, the Grand Master’s Palace was richly embellished with collections of works of art and heritage items, some of which still grace its walls.

A visit to the Palace Armoury collection will reveal that armour was not simply a means of defending the body against injury during combat. It was also a status symbol and a means of showing one’s wealth and power. The laboriously fashioned and lavishly decorated armour of some of the knights reflect clearly this phenomenon. Among the most notable artefacts, visitors can view the unique display of suits of armour which were owned by Grand Masters Alof de Wignacourt and Jean de Valette, armour and weapons used by the Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of 1565, and a selection of artillery pieces.

During the Open Day, various activities will organised at these sites, including free tours reflecting the conservation project which is currently taking place at the Grand Master’s Palace State Rooms.
