While an average of 9,000 VAT inspections were conducted in 2017, 2018 and 2019, only 1,994 inspections were conducted in 2020.
2020 only saw 176 irregularities as a result. Meanwhile, 2017 saw 539, 2018 saw 921 and 2019 saw 792. The people who committed the illegalities faced criminal procedures or were fined.
This was revealed in a parliamentary question by MP Ivan Bartolo. He asked Minister of Finance Edward Scicluna to reveal the number of VAT inspections conducted from 2017 till now, year by year. He also asked how many illegalities were discovered.
Bartolo also asked how many VAT inspectors there are. Scicluna outlined that VAT inspectors are now Revenue Inspectors, and that there are 61.
Just 65 people have been investigated over VAT offences this year.
