No nominations received on first day of casual elections

The Electoral Commission received no nominations for the casual elections taking place in the ninth and twelfth electoral district following the resignation of former Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil and former MP Marthese Portelli.

In a statement, the Electoral Commission said that no candidatures were received on the first day since the nominations have opened.

On Monday, the Electoral Commission started the process to elect two new MPs following the resignation of Busuttil and Portelli.

Candidates who contested the ninth and twelfth district in the 2017 snap general election are eligible to contest the casual elections taking place on the two districts. Nominations are being received between 9 and 12pm until 7 March.

Votes will be counted on 10 March.

Speaker confirms that he has received Portelli’s resignation letter

Speaker of the House Anglu Farrugia confirmed that he received a resignation letter from Opposition MP Marthese Portelli dated 28 February. Opposition whip Robert Cutajar thanked both Busuttil and Portelli for their work.
