The Malta Local Councils Association has signed an agreement with Malta Clean Up pledging not to release any balloons during events organised by local councils.
So far, 41 local councils have signed this memorandum of agreement.
President of the Local Councils Association Mario Fava said that the association recognises the environmental damage caused by plastic which ends up in the sea and impacts marine life. During the press conference to mark the agreement, various alternatives to using balloons during events were suggested by the association.
The press conference was attended by Cami Appelgren, the founder of Malta Clean Up.
The Local Councils Association is also to initiate a series of meetings with the Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change designed to set up legislation by which the agreement may be legally enforced.
