New parish priests for Gżira and Ħal Għaxaq

Fr Gordon Refalo and Fr Andrew Schembri have been appointed as parish priests for the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Gżira and the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary in Ħal Għaxaq respectively. / Curia

Archbishop Charles Scicluna has appointed Fr Gordon Refalo and Fr Andrew Schembri as the new parish priests for the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Gżira and the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary in Ħal Għaxaq respectively.

The announcement was made on Sunday in a statement by the Archbishop’s Curia.

Who is Fr Refalo?

Fr Refalo was born on 30 November 1961 in Sliema. He attended St Joseph’s school in Rabat and St Aloysius College in Birkirkara. He was ordained priest on 5 July 1991.

Fr Refalo has already served as deputy parish priest at Ħamrun and has carried out pastoral work in Naxxar. He was also a parish priest in Santa Luċija, l-Ibraġ, Swatar and Ħal Luqa. In 2017, he started serving as a parish priest in Ħal Għaxaq.

There are around 10,400 parishioners in Gżira.

Who is Fr Schembri?

Fr Schembri was born on 11 May 1989. He grew up in Qormi. He was ordained priest on 29 June 2016 after having read for a degree in theology at the University of Malta.

Fr Schembri served at the parish church in Attard when he was still a deacon and was later appointed deputy parish priest. He was also spiritual director at Kulleġġ Maria Reġina in Naxxar.

There are around 4,700 parishioners in Ħal Għaxaq.
