Wasteserv and the Ministry for the Environment have launched a new organic waste separation service called Sort It Out.
Containers for organic disposal (food waste) will be distributed to a number of households. This waste will be used to cover rubbish dumps and as a soil fertiliser after treatment.
Minister José Herrera explained that 150,000 containers will be distributed around Malta and Gozo. This organic waste will be collected three times a day from the 31st October.
A Wateserv representative also explained how the black bag garbage is used to produce methane; however residue from treatment is hazardous and that is why the organic part is being differentiated.
36,000 tonnes of garbage are dumped every year.
