New garbage disposal service launched

Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change José Herrera launches the nationwide distribution of organic and recyclable bins

Wasteserv and the Ministry for the Environment have launched a new organic waste separation service called Sort It Out.

Containers for organic disposal (food waste) will be distributed to a number of households. This waste will be used to cover rubbish dumps and as a soil fertiliser after treatment.

Minister José Herrera explained that 150,000 containers will be distributed around Malta and Gozo. This organic waste will be collected three times a day from the 31st October.

A Wateserv representative also explained how the black bag garbage is used to produce methane; however residue from treatment is hazardous and that is why the organic part is being differentiated.

36,000 tonnes of garbage are dumped every year.
