Nearly 8 million contraband cigarettes were seized by customs on Friday, in a container at the Freeport, the Customs Department said in a statement.
The Customs Department said that the container from Rotterdam in the Netherlands was en route to Tunisia, was discovered containing illegal cigarettes when it arrived in Malta. 7,730,000 counterfeit cigarettes were found inside. Representatives of the company which holds the trademark for the cigarettes presented a court application in Civil Court against the company involved in the case.
The investigation and eventual seizure of cigarettes involved a joint investigation by the Container Monitoring Unit, the Intellectual Property Rights Unit and the Scanning Team.
A total of 56.33 million counterfeit cigarettes were seized by customs to date.
