A total of 318,940 contraband cigarettes were elevated from a vehicle and three garages in Qormi during a joint operation between the Customs Enforcement Unit and the Police Rapid Intervention Unit, on Wednesday.
In a statement the Customs department said that officials followed a vehicle leaving Qormi and requested the assistance of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit to intercept the vehicle.
The vehicle was detained in Għaxaq and during the search 89,600 contraband cigarettes were found. A man was placed under arrest pending investigation.
Other searches took place in two garages, a bar, and the bar’s store which belong to two men connected to the detained man.
In the two garages, further 229,340 cigarettes were found bringing the total of seized cigarettes to 318,640.
Both persons were also placed under arrest and taken into custody pending investigation.
The endangered taxes emanating from these contraband cigarettes are €55,777 in Excise Duty, €12,,664 in VAT and €5,327 as Import Duty.
The Customs Department thanked the Malta Police Force especially the Rapid Intervention Unit and the Economic Crimes Unit for their assistance during the operation.
