The Malta Union of Teachers is calling for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Robert Abela to discuss the closure of all schools, stating that the coronavirus outbreak has created an unsustainable situation.
However, Education Minister Owen Bonnici reiterated in Parliament that health authorities saw no reason for such a measure, though he acknowledged that the situation was fluid and could change rapidly.
“Authorities’ failure to act in schools is leading to an unsustainable state of panic, with some schools reporting attendance levels of just 40%,” the union said, calling for “an immediate and urgent discussion leading to the closure of all schools for an agreed-upon period.”
The union stressed that it was not making this request lightly, and that this was why it wanted to ensure that no mistakes were made at the detriment of the Maltese population.
