The Malta Union of Teachers, MUT is currently discussing a proposal with the Ministry for Education and Employment to set up a virtual online school to provide teaching and learning to students who are vulnerable and are not attending schools.
The MUT said, in a statement, that it understands that students who cannot attend school during this scholastic year, due to their health conditions, shall be provided with an alternative which caters for their requirements.
The union said it is finalising discussions with MEDE, which is the employer and service provider, regarding the setting up of the virtual school.
MUT said this shall not affect the workload of educators in schools as the service shall run in parallel with educators.
Sources informed Newsbook.com.mt that a number of educators are sceptic about this as there aren’t even enough educators for all classes, let alone for online teaching. This newsroom is also informed that there are some teachers who believe that this could have been a solution which authorities should have considered months ago and not wait until the start of a new scholastic year.
On Monday the union issued an ultimatum, until Thursday, to the government to take the necessary actions and implement new measures against the coronavirus pandemic, otherwise, in a matter of a few days, there might be a situation where schools will not have enough educators either because of quarantine leave of because educators might contract the virus.
