The Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) has issued instructions to nurses not to leave their wards as the hospital pharmacy is requesting that nurses should now be collecting Methadone instead of carers.

The MUMN explained that this industrial action was called as the nurses’ duties are towards their patients and not towards the hospital’s pharmacy.

In a letter that was sent to all MUMN members, it was clarified that currently Mater Dei Hospital is operating with half the number of nurses that it requires to run the operation effectively and therefore the pharmacy’s request is deemed “unacceptable”.

The MUMN also advised its members that it is currently discussing with the Mater Dei Hospital administration on waiting times with mothers to be before the start of the birthing process. The union also explained that it is proposing a porter system so that employees outside of the wards would be able to help patients transfer between wards, instead of those working in the wards.
