One man was killed and seven were left injured – of which two critically – after a man went on a two-hour stabbing rampage in Birmingham’s city centre last night.

According to West Midlands Police, the stabbings did not appear to be related to terrorism or criminal gangs. There is a single suspect, and a manhunt is underway.

The first stabbing took place at 12.30am, and attacks took place in four separate locations, with the killer ultimately reaching the area where the city’s Gay Village meets its Chinese Quarter. However, there is no evidence that the stabbings were a hate crime, with the assailant apparently attacking at random.

One man has succumbed to his injures, while a man and a woman sustained life-threatening injuries. Five others were left with non-life-threatening injuries.
