One of Valletta’s most iconic cafés, Cafeteria Prego in South Street, has announced its permanent closure.

In a Facebook post on the Social Channel page, it was announced that the owners of the cafeteria, the Bezzina family, had taken this decision with heartfelt sadness.

The Bezzinas have been running the establishment since 1946.

On social media, a number of customers of the café expressed their sorrow at the announcement, with some people hoping that whoever takes over the place leaves the one-of-a-kind decor unchanged:

“The last genuine, dare I say it, time-warp cafe in Valletta, goes down. Bye bye to the retro ambience and another one for my ever burgeoning nostalgia list.”

“Hope whoever takes over has the sense to leave it as unchanged as possible, although doubt it very much.”

“I will miss Prego! …. a unique gem of the past …. and one of the only consistent safe havens of street culture on the island!”
