The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra has officially presented its season-launch concert, MPOpening Notes in the presence of President George Vella and Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici.
The season-launch concert is held in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency and the MPO will perform a free open-air concert under the patronage of the President of Malta.
President George Vella showed his appreciation for the scheme launched by MPO to entice more people to attend activities organized by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. At the same time, by means of an MPO membership card, the public will be helping the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF) with a financial contribution to further the work this Foundation is carrying out with the most vulnerable in our society.
Minister Owen Bonnici lauded this collaboration as it further strengthens public outreach for cultural and artistic events of this nature, especially for such a good cause.
“Apart from its outreach aspect, this concert also provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents, whilst also being a lovely addition to our ever-growing cultural calendar which is becoming more sought after by locals and visitors alike,” he stated. He concluded by thanking all those involved in the realisation of such a project and said that such events have become an intrinsic part for the strengthening of our communities.
With the participation of Clare Ghigo and Federica Falzon, Michelle Castelletti leads the orchestra in renowned musical numbers. Delving into the programme, Sigmund Mifsud, Executive Chair of the MPO, highlighted the works to be featured, including the William Tell Overture, Bizet’s Habanera, Con Te Partiro`, Offenbach’s Infernal Galop and Elgar’s Nimrod.
Mifsud also outlined the revamped MPO Membership Scheme, offering patrons the opportunity to become part of Malta’s national musical ensemble for €10 whilst benefiting from limited tickets for €1 and 50% discounts. Proceeds from the Loyalty Card will go entirely towards the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.
Valletta Cultural Agency Chairman Jason Micallef said that the VCA is proud to be collaborating with and supporting the MPO, which falls within the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government, once again for this season’s opening: “Initiatives such as the MPOpening Notes concert serve to showcase the excellence of local musicianship in the heart of our capital city, in an open and accessible way. This is exactly what the VCA strives to do through its collaboration with other public cultural organisations and entities.”
The MPOpening Notes concert will be held on Friday 6th September at St George’s Square , Valletta at 8.30 pm. Entrance is free of charge, but seating is available on a first-come first-served basis.
