Mother of new-born abandoned in Buġibba, to be given mental health support

Court experts assessing the mother of a new-born child that was abandoned on in Buġibba last September, should be given mental health support.

The 22 year-old mother, who has not been named for legal reasons, had told psychological and psychiatric experts that she was living in a difficult relationship, along with facing financial problems.

For this reason, she had intended to give up her son to the Ursuline Sisters’ Crèche, believing this to be in the best interests of the child.

Although the abandonment of the child, now called Cristiano, would’ve have seen her facing between seven months and a year in jail, Magistrate Joe Mifsud said that no criminal action would be taken against her.

The Magistrate has also ordered an investigation into the partner of the woman involved. It is understood on the day of the birth, her partner assaulted her.

According to the experts who consulted with the woman, the partner had previously refused to accept responsibility for the child.  It has confirmed through DNA tests, that the child is indeed his.
