Mother and newborn baby test positive for Covid-19 in Gozo

A mother and her newborn baby have tested positive for Covid-19 at the Gozo General Hospital, is informed.

Their condition is stable, according to a spokesperson for Steward Health Care, which administers the hospital in Victoria.

Mother and child were admitted to hospital overnight after testing positive for the coronavirus, and the spokesperson emphasised that they had contracted the virus in the community, and not at the hospital.

Last month, Dr Tanya Melillo, who heads the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Unit, had revealed that a baby was born with Covid-19 last month, having contracted the virus in utero.

There had been 57 active cases of Covid-19 in Gozo last Friday – the numbers are updated by Superintendent for Public Health Charmaine Gauci in her weekly update.

No specific information on Gozo is included in the health authorities’ daily bulletin, whose Sunday edition confirmed 117 new cases and 2,172 known active cases.
