Malta Red Cross is advising the public to avoid swimming during thunderstorms, as doing so could be fatal. Additionally, it stated that most of the lifeguarded beaches in Malta are flying the double-red flag.

The organisation insisted that due to a developing storm over the Maltese Islands, most of the lifeguarded beaches, which are flying the double-red flag, bring about a very dangerous hazard for all swimmers. Thus, it is strongly recommended that one avoids all large open areas.

If a lightning strike hits the seas, it can be fatal to those in the vicinity, added Red Cross.

The NGO appealed for the public to follow the instructions of the lifeguards, and to let common sense prevail in order to prevent accidents.
