Migrants detained at Ħal Safi Detention Centre on the pretext of medical screening have protested the arbitrary detention on Monday.

Police and CPD officials were dispatched on site around 10.30am.

The migrants affixed banners carrying the word “freedom” on the wall. They were also heard chanting slogans as they staged protests for freedom.

The police have described the protest as “riot”. No one was hurt during the protests.

Members of the Police force and the Civil Protection Department were called to provide assistance at the Ħal Safi Detention Centre after the migrants residing there revolted on Monday.

Last week 34 non-governmental organisations have called on the government to release the asylum seekers held in detention on medical grounds. Their detention needs to be clearly and objectively justified in each case, with the NGOs reminding that arbitrary detention is unlawful.
