A boat carrying migrants passed through the Maltese Search and Rescue region onto Italy, thus making Lampedusa the safest port according to a statement by the Maltese Government on Thursday evening. The Italian Coast Guard contributing to the Frontex “Operation Themis” on the high seas intercepted the said boat.
The Armed Forces of Malta monitored the boat carrying migrants on board through its journey in the Maltese Search and Rescue zone. The boat refused assistance and kept heading towards Italy.
In a statement the Government said that the Italian Rescue Co-ordination Centre has no legal claim to ask Malta to provide a safe port to this boat. The Government commented on the lack of interest shown by the Rome Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre on the case when the boat was still in Libya’s Search and Rescue zone.
