Micallef has to prove European values during V18 – Timmermans

The Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans said that the Chairman of the Valletta 2018, Jason Micallef, has to promote European values ​​in the management of the European City of Culture.

Timmermans was responding to David Casa’s letter which was sent to Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. In the letter, Timmermans explains that the Chairman is appointed by the national authorities and therefore the Commission can not assume responsibility for what he says during the European City of Culture.

European Commissioner Timmermans also said the mission of the Capital of Culture is to foster active citizenship and to ensure that democracy, the freedom of the press and rule of law be respected as the core values which founded the European Union.

Timmermans explained that the Commission strongly condemns the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
