Partit Nazzjonalista’s head of delegation and MEP Roberta Metsola has been nominated by the European Popular Party (EPP) to serve as vice-president of the European Parliament on Wednesday.

The vacancy was created after former vice-president Mairead McGuinness became European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union last month.

The news was announced by EPP in a tweet.

Writing on twitter the MEP said that she is proud.

“For a girl from an island in the middle of the Mediterranean, this is a big moment,” she said.

Opposition leader and Partit Nazzjonalista leader Bernard Grech congratulated Metsola on her nomination. In a Facebook post, Grech described it as a historical event adding that Malta is proud of her nomination.

There are fourteen vice-presidents of the European Parliament who sit in for the President in presiding over the plenary of the European Parliament. They are also members of the European Parliament Bureau, which lays down rules for the EP’s smooth functioning. Among its other duties the Bureau draws up Parliament’s preliminary draft budget and decides on administrative, staff and organisational matters.
