Maltese Association of Youth Workers (MAY) in a statement urged the local authorities to drop all charges against three young African youths aged 15, 16 and 19 accused of hijacking. The association was announcing its support to the call made by Amnesty International which is also asking the Maltese authorities to drop all charges against the alleged hijacking of a merchant vessel ‘El Hiblu’ and close the case before trial.
On 20 November, Amnesty International launched a campaign for the ‘Hiblu 3’ that are being accused of hijacking the sea vessel El Hiblu 1 back to March 2019.
“These young people exercise their right of looking for asylum and they should not be punished for that. We believe that they should be given the chance to contribute positively to our society”, said Christian Mizzi for MAY. The association concluded that as Youth workers MAY believes that the young people have every right to ask for asylum and not be detained.
The Amnesty write for rights campaign for El Hiblu 3 is running 20 November to 31 December 2020.
