A growing chorus of organisations and individuals have asked for mass social gatherings to be curbed after a pool party helped bring about a resurgence of Covid-19, but Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli has no plan to join them.
Asked to comment on large festivals that are set to take place in the coming months – which generally seek to attract sizeable crowds of British tourists – Farrugia Portelli said that the issue was not “whether they should happen or not.’
“Instead, the question to be asked is what could be done differently, or what could be fixed,” the minister maintained.
She did not exclude restricting the headcount of such events, though she emphasised that the government was acting in a “balanced and cautious manner.”
The Medical Association of Malta is threatening industrial action should the government not introduce a ban on mass events, but the minister appeared to hit back at the union, noting that it had called for a lockdown a few months ago, advice which the government did not take.
