Bishops’ advice on weddings during Holy Week

In view of the coronavirus pandemic, many couples who were to get married during this year have postponed the date for 2021. In a statement issued by the Maltese Episcopal Conference, it was suggested that marriages should not be celebrated on the 30th and 31st of March next year as celebrations related to the Holy Week will take place.

The statement signed by Archbishop Charles Scicluna states that marriages will only take place during that week in exceptional situations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this eventuality, since the reading from God’s words would not reflect the celebration of the sacrament of marriage, the Bishops of Malta and Gozo will grant permission for the reading of a passage from St John’s gospel Cap 12, vv20-26, during marriages taking place on the 30th and 31st of March 2021.
