A 33-year-old man from Safi was arraigned in court on Tuesday afternoon before Magistrate Charmaine Galea. The man pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
The accused appeared in court in a suit and had his left little finger bandaged.
The man was charged over the stabbing of Chantelle Chetcuti who succumbed to the injuries within 24 hours. The alleged aggressor is the victim’s former partner.
The case took place at around 8pm on Sunday evening in Triq il-Kbira, Żabbar.
The man was accused of Chetcuti’s murder. He was also accused of carrying a knife during the commission of a crime against the person, of carrying a knife without the necessary permit, being in possession of cocaine and breaching public peace.
Chetcuti was stabbed several times in the upper torso and once in the temple, and was left lying unconscious on the ground after the attack for some time.
The accused gave himself to the Police some time after the attack when he entered the Floriana Police Headquarters. He was covered in blood and had some injuries for which he was treated before questioning commenced. The police found a substance thought to be drugs following a search on the accused.
Defence counsel Franco Debono asked the court to appoint a psychiatric expert to examine the accused. The prosecution did not object to the request.
The court upheld the request and appointed Dr Anton Grech.
The defence counsel made no request for bail at this stage.
Lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri appeared for the accused.
Police Inspector Kurt Zahra led the prosecution.
Man to be arraigned and charged with the murder of Chantelle Chetcuti
A 33-year-old man from Safi will be arraigned in court charged with the murder of Chantelle Chetcuti, 34 also from Safi.
The man is the former partner of Chetcuti and the father of her two children. Chetcuti died yesterday after succumbing to the injuries she suffered after being stabbed five times.
The woman died 24 hours after being stabbed in the head. After the attack she was left unconscious for some time on a pavement. She was stabbed in Triq il-Kbira at 8.15pm.
The alleged aggressor fled from the scene of the murder, in Zabbar, and turned up at the police headquarters in blood-stained clothes. He was also found in possession of what is beleived to be illegal drugs.
The man will be arraigned infront of Magistrate Charmaine Galea.
The arraignment is expected to take place today at 1230h.
