A man was condemned to eight months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stealing his friend’s credit card to book himself a holiday. Edison Carlos Perez Acosta, 33, a Peruvian national, lived with a woman in a hostel. In court, it emerged that the man used the woman’s credit card after she left it in their room. He used her card to make a hotel and flight reservation.
The victim filed a report on September 27.
The man had told the police that the woman was his ex-girlfriend and she reported him as payback for cheating on her.
However, further investigations revealed that the man had committed similar crimes in other countries.
Legal aid lawyer Fransina Abela pleaded the court to deliver a suspended sentence and that he is deported, however, the prosecution objected.
Presiding magistrate Joe Mifsud took into consideration that the men admitted the charges brought against him at an early stage.
The man was found guilty and imprisoned for eight months. The court ordered the man to pay the money back to the woman.
The man will be deported once he serves his time in jail and refunds the money.
