A 75-year-old man from Birżebbuġa was jailed five years after he was found guilty of corrupting and raping a 14-year-old girl in 2004.

Ġużeppi Magri had got to know the victim after he leased a property from the victim’s father when she was thirteen. Initially the man groped her and sexually abused her before raping her when she turned 14.

The abuse spanned over a number of years, at 16 he accused her of having sex with the school bus driver and started picking her up from school himself. The violence on the girl continued over the years.

In another incident, the man had seen her talking to another man. He had threatened her on the phone before taking her to Dingli Cliffs, beating her and threatening to throw her off the cliffs. The man had cut her on the hip using a pocketknife.

The girl was not able to leave the house after this incident and finally opened up to her family doctor who informed her father about the ongoing abuse. Her father had taken her to the police station to file a police report.

The accused would blackmail the victim and stalk her.

The court noted that the man started his relationship with the girl when he was 55 years old. The court said that “the accused knew what he was doing and wanted to do that which he effectively did, and for this the accused must pay.”

Magri appeared without a lawyer when he was sentenced to five years imprisonment and €2,000 fine.
