A 27-year-old man escaped police custody on Wednesday afternoon as he was being escorted from the Law Courts to the Corradino Correctional Facility.

The police reported that the vehicle taking the man to custody was in Aldo Moro Road in Marsa when the man, a Sudanese national, made a run for it. The incident occurred at around 5.30pm.

A search is now being carried out by the police officer who had been escorting him, district police and Rapid Intervention Unit officers.

According to the Criminal Code, a simple escape is punishable by a prison sentence ranging from six months to a year. Should the escape be deemed to happen due to the negligence or imprudence of the person charged with the detainee’s custody, the person responsible may themselves be jailed for a period of up to a year, with the sentence depending on the sentence the detainee concerned was serving.
