Man accused of trying to abuse woman in Paceville given bail

A 39-year-old man was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court on Sunday morning and charged with attempting to have sex with a woman against her will as well as with being drunk in public.

The man who is a Pakistani national residing in Msida was allegedly drunk when he followed a 35-year-old woman into the restroom of a Paceville club at around 4am on Saturday.

The man tried to rape the woman who called out for help. Others arrived on the scene and held the man until the police arrived.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit granted the accused bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €8,000. The man was ordered to sign the bail book three times a week and to abide by a curfew.

The court also issued a protection order in favour of the victim.

Police Inspector Joseph Xerri led the prosecution.

Legal aid lawyer Leontine Calleja assisted the accused.
