A 40-year-old Qormi man was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to carrying out an armed robbery in a lotto booth in his hometown.

The man was arrested yesterday over the armed robbery which took place on Wednesday at the lotto booth on St Edward Street.

The booth was being manned by a 31-year-old woman from Kirkop when a man entered the premises, demanding money. The woman was threatened at knife-point, and the assailant made off with some cash.

CCTV footage at the lotto booth helped the police identify the culprit, who sought to conceal his identity by wearing two surgical masks, one on his face and another on his head.

But shortly before his arrest on Friday night, he was involved in a violent argument at a Qormi bar, in which he allegedly smashed a glass in the face of another man.

He was thus charged over the theft, holding the lotto booth employee against her will and slightly injuring her over the armed robbery. He was also accused of causing serious injuries during the bar fight.

No request for bail was made.
