The Medical Association of Malta (MAM) has ordered its members working at health centres to refrain from carrying out any work related to privately operated care homes for the elderly and coronavirus
In a statement the doctors have called on the government to draw up an emergency plan with the association after a public health emergency is declared.
The association president Dr Martin Balzan highlighted that unless a state of public health emergency is declared, the government will remain in control. Once a public health emergency is announced, the Superintendent of Public Health Professor Charmaine Gauci has greater power to decide.
Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne had said that it made little to no difference declaring a public health emergency in controlling the coronavirus outbreak. He had dismissed the call saying that the only difference was a technical one which would allow the Public Health Superintendent to change a law.
