Through a new agreement, Maltese patients in need of lung, liver or kidney transplants will be given specialised treatment in Italian centres.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said that the agreement was signed this week together with the Istituto Mediterraneo per i trapianti e terapie ad alta specilalizzazione (ISMETT).
According to the Ministry, “over the years there were four Maltese who undergone surgery for lung transplant in Palermo’s ISMETT centre. This agreement will allow ISMETT to assist Maltese patients in cases of lung transplants, liver transplants and kidney transplants”.
The agreement also allows for specialised training for Maltese professionals in various fields, including that of the implantation of the heart, kidney and pancreas.
