Maltese-Australian grandparents succumb to Covid-19 days apart

Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

Two grandparents who had left Malta for Australia in their youth have succumbed to Covid-19 within 31 hours of each other, Australian media have reported.

Carmen and Charles Micallef, who had spent decades together before divorcing, lived in the Melbourne area in the Australian state of Victoria, which has declared a “state of disaster” after a resurgence in Covid-19 cases.

Carmen, who was 92, died on Sunday night at a residential facility in the Melbourne suburb of Werribee, while Charles, who was 87, died at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, their grief-stricken son Frank described the experience as a bad dream, and appealed to fellow Victorians to act responsibly in the face of a virus that “kills vulnerable people and destroys their family.”

The restrictions introduced in the state, he lamented, came too little too late.
