Malta’s maritime industry adds 12% to Malta’s GDP and has so far created 23,000 new jobs, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg has explained.

The Minister also said that by end of March, around 8.370 vessels with a combined weight of 82 million tonnes, had been registered in Malta. This had accounted for over 6% more ships and a 60% increase in vessel tonnage registered under the Maltese flag in the last half decade.

Minister Borg addresses these increases during a meeting with representatives of the merchant ship company Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA is understood to be the largest ro-ro (Roll On/Roll Off) vessel company in the world for the transport of vehicles from cars to trucks, trains and boats.

According to the Minister, Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA operates 32 vessels under Malta’s Tonnage Tax Regime and a further 21 vessels under the Maltese flag, accounting for over 800,000 tonnes.
