Updated: Landfil back to normal; PD demand inquiry

The Wasteserv plant at Magħtab is now back to normal and Partit Demokratiku has demanded an inquiry for an investigation.

An area where approximately 30,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuel are stored caught fire yesterday and engulfed the Magħtab landfill. The Civil Protection Department asked the residents of nearby localities to keep all windows closed due to the great black smoke as a consequence of this massive fire.

The company thanked the employees who worked with the Protection Civil Department in order to tackle the inconveniences in the least time possible.

Last night, the Health Authorities advised people to wash all fruit and vegetables before being consumed due to the pollution caused by the fire at Magħtab which could have affected nearby fields.

The Environment and Resources Authority will be working with international experts to analyse soil samples which may have been affected by the fire. The ERA officials will be inspecting the area when it is safe to do so.

PD calls for a public inquiry

Partit Demokratiku (PD) has called for an independent public inquiry to investigate yesterday’s fires at the Magħtab landfill as well as the  the fires at the Sant’ Antnin recycling plant in Marsascala January 2018 and May 2017.

The PD said that the investigation should produce precautionary and preventive measures to avoid a repetition of these incidents.
