The Superintendent of Public Health Prof. Charmaine Gauci delivered the daily update on COVID-19 cases in Malta and Gozo.

Highlights from today’s press conference:

  • 5 new cases: 3 travel-related and 2 locally transmitted
  • Total coronavirus cases: 156
  • 5 patients Infectious diseases unit, 4 ITU and 17 St Thomas Hospital

12:49 Prof. Charmaine Gauci appealed again for vulnerable people to stay home and other people to not go out of their homes for unnecessary reasons.

12:47 Parents of children who have contracted the virus will be allowed to visit their children at Mater Dei Hospital. The reason behind this is that parents would have already been exposed to the virus. Protective masks would be provided to parents visiting their children at MDH.

12:44 Prof. Gauci mentioned that health professionals have the necessary equipment to conduct a maximum of 700 swab tests per day.

12:42 It was also explained that people who suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure are also at risk of health complications if they contract coronavirus.

12:40 Prof. Gauci reiterated the importance of social distancing and isolation especially for people who are considered as vulnerable.

Regarding the Maltese National who contracted the virus in Spain – Prof. Gauci said that many Maltese people live abroad and they fall under the responsibility of the respective health systems. She also said that authorities do follow such cases.

Travel related:

Male who was in quarantine and had travelled to Mexico.
Maltese woman who had travelled to the UK. She was in quarantine
A healthcare worker, male, who was abroad. He attended work.

Local transmission:

Maltese woman. Two relatives are being tested as they suffering from COVID-19 symptoms
Another Maltese woman. Authorities are carrying out contact tracing as the woman was reporting to work.

On Sunday, Prof. Gauci said that a total of 585 swabs were taken at the swabbing centres, health centres and Mater Dei Hospital. Two individuals tested positive for coronavirus.

A total of 151 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Malta and Gozo.
