Minister for Social Accommodation Roderick Galdes said that the number of individuals who are waiting for social accommodation is the lowest since 2001.
Minister Galdes stated this while visiting ongoing works at a social housing site in Birkirkara. He said that the housing currently being built in this locality consists of 73 apartments and 55 garages.
The Chief Executive Officer, CEO of the Housing Authority, Leonid McKay, who also addressed the press conference explained that the number of individuals on the waiting list amounts to 2602. Until three months ago around 2900 people were on the list.
McKay mentioned that there are various schemes which can help people avoid falling under the social accommodation waiting list. These schemes fall under the responsibility of the Housing Authority.
During the press conference, Minister Roderick Galdes said that despite the coronavirus situation construction works for social housing could not stop as the people who are in desperate need of a home cannot also be victims of the pandemic. He also said that the necessary measures are being adopted to reduce the possibility of contracting or transmitting coronavirus on site.
Galdes also said that the government’s aim is not only to build 1,700 social accommodation but to also increase social assistance.
