1,399 persons died during the first four months of 2020. This means there were 77 less deaths overall when compared to the same four months of 2019, which saw a total of 1,070 deaths.
Minister for Health Chris Fearne released these statistics during Parliament, in response to questions put by MPs Claudette Buttigieg and Claudio Grech.
Of the 1,399 persons in 2020, 913 died in a hospital or clinic, and 119 were autopsied. In comparison, 2019 saw 1,070 deaths in hospitals or clinics.
Interestingly, 2017 saw the exact same number of deaths during the four-month period, while 2018 only differed by one case. In 2017, 954 died in hospitals or clinics, while 2018 saw 992 deaths, which is an increase of 38 deaths. This means that 2020 saw the lowest number of deaths in hospitals or clinics.
