President George Vella said that the annual national fund-raising marathon L-Istrina will go on as usual.
The office of the President said that it will be held on December 26, as it was held in past years. The President was reacting to the appeals made by some to postpone or cancel L-Istrina because of the current political crisis.
Vella said this during the signing of an agreement between the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF) and PBS formalising the arrangements between the two entities for the televising of L-Istrina.
On the other hand former Labour MEP Marlene Mizzi in a Facebook post wrote that those “who are posting that L-istrina should be cancelled – because of the toxic political atmosphere – do not appreciate that the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF) is exclusively dependent on donations for its charity work. It is also a completely apolitical organization.”
She made the following appeal: So please, let us all show that, inspite of everything, the big- hearted Maltese people are still capable of being united in their generosity in aid of the sick, the needy and the vulnerable. Please, do not let anything override the needs of the seriously sick , the poor and the vulnerable, and anyone dependent on financial help from the MCCFF.”
She concluded her appeal by urging people to “make this Istrina particularly special this time.”
