In comments made to the Italian news agency ANSA, Cardinal Angelo Becciu, the Deputy Secretary of State of the Vatican recalled what Pope Francis said that migrants are human beings not numbers.

In his comments Becciu said that it’s unacceptable that politics is conducted at the expense of migrants’ lives. He also criticised the fact that the burden of reception is not assumed by the European Union as a whole. He referred to the Italian government’s new hard line on migrants as “unacceptable”.

Becciu ended his comments by saying that although it may be unpopular to defend the marginalized neither the pope nor the Church can fail in their mission.
