Disgraced former OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schembri has returned to Malta following a two-day trip to Tunisia. Newsbook.com.mt has confirmed independently that Schembri is back following a number of media reports.
Newsbook.com.mt has sent questions to Schembri which, so far, have remained unanswered.
Schembri left to Tunisia on 20 January on a morning flight, a day after his friend and former OPM employee Neville Gafà. Another former OPM official was also in Tunisia around the same time. This information was revealed by Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi in a Facebook post and subsequently confirmed by different media outlets.
It is not yet clear why Schembri took the trip to Tunisia. A few weeks earlier, Schembri together with his family had taken a trip to Italy. Many voiced their concern about his trip abroad. Schembri remains under investigation in connection to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, the tampering of evidence and the phantom job given to self-confessed middleman Melvin Theuma.
Schembri was arrested and was later released without a charge in December.
