Updated: 2016 rape case: One of the two accused found guilty

One of the men charged with the rape of a woman in 2016 was found guilty by members of the jury whilst another man charged with the same crime was found not guilty.

After six hours of deliberation, the jury found Seydon Bandango from Burkina Faso guilty of raping the woman. The other man, who comes from Nigeria, was found not guilty. Few details emerged about the case as the trial by jury was heard behind closed doors. The sentenced is expected to be handed down on Thursday.

The case happened in July of 2016 when the woman was snatched in St. George’s Bay and raped in Pembroke.

Court was presided by Judge Giovanni Grixti.

Anne Marie Cutajar and Nadia Attard are representing the Attorney General (AG)’s Office in court. The AG’s Office is also leading the prosecution.

Arthur Azzopardi is representing the victim.

Charmaine Cherrett and Simon Micallef Stafrace are appearing as legal counsels for the accused.

Inspector Trevor Micallef and Elton Taliana have led the investigations.
