Journalist Pelin Ünker has been invited to Malta by Head of Delegation and Partit Nazzjonalista MEP David Casa where she will be attending an event organised by the MEP and the vigil, which is held monthly at the Great Siege Monument demanding justice for the assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Ünker was recently sentenced to 13 months imprisonment following her work on Paradise Papers. She is currently waiting for the appeal decision.
Casa was recently in Istanbul where he met Ünker and other journalists and activists working in Turkey. He also urged Turkey to drop the charges against the journalist. The Head of Delegation is also part of the EU-Turkey Parliamentary committee and has been following the situation in Turkey closely.
In a statement, Casa explained that after meeting with the journalist in Turkey, he understood better the persecution that journalists encounter while doing their job. He said that while in Malta journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated, in Turkey Ünker is risking a prison sentence.
Casa remarked that he will continue working in the European Parliament to make sure that the EU institutions protect journalists not just within the European Parliament but also beyond.
