‘Joker’ first DC film to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar

The 2020 Oscar nominations were announced live on Monday 13th January 2020, with Joker receiving the highest number of nominations (11), including Best Picture, Best Director for Todd Phillips, and Best Lead Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and Sam Mendes’ 1917 tied for the second most nominations with 10 each.  Those films, along with Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story and Parasite will compete for best picture.

South Korean psychological thriller film Parasite, received a total of six nominations, including Best Picture and for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Bong Joon-ho.

Female filmmakers were entirely shut out of the best director race, with the biggest snub probably being Greta Gerwig for Little Women. Along with Phillips and Joon-ho, the nominees include Scorsese, Mendes and Tarantino.

Scarlett Johansson is nominated for two Academy Awards in the same year – for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit – which hasn’t happened since 2007. This is the first time the actress has been nominated for an Oscar.

American Factory, the first Netflix film produced by former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
