On Saturday 22nd June the Naxxar Parish Church will be hosting a choral concert entitled Corpus Christi with the participation of the Jubilate Deo Choir (Malta) and Junge Kantorei St Martin (Germany).
Both choirs will sing works associated with the Holy Eucharist and will feature works by Haydn, Mozart, Caccini, Gjeilo, Josef Bugeja and Christopher Muscat among others. This concert will be the culmination of a three-day collaboration that will see the Junge Kantorei St Martin, the Jubilate Deo Choir and its children’s choir (Pueri Cantores Jubilate) rehearsing together, exchanging ideas and good practices and making new friendships through the universal language of music.
Preparations started over a year ago when the choirs’ directors Ute Hormuth (St Martin) and Christopher Muscat (Jubilate Deo) started exploring the possibility of a joint concert in Malta and working on a programme around the theme of the Holy Eucharist.
The concert will also see the involvement of Daniela Ellul (choir mistress of the Pueri Cantores Jubilate Deo) and Josef Bugeja (assistant music director of the Jubilate Deo Choir) who will be conducting some of the works in this concert. Organists Ronald Camilleri and Noah Allmann will be accompanying the choirs on the historic 1775 Santucci organ at the parish church of Naxxar.
Junge Kantorei St. Martin hails from the small municipality of Sankt Martin in the Südliche Weinstraße district in western Germany. Saint Martin is also the patron of the town’s Catholic Parish Church, home to the Kantorei St Martin founded in 2003. In 2007 the choir had over 50 children and teenagers from St Martin and the surrounding areas and, by time, a youth and adult choirs were also formed. The various choir formations participate in a number of musical services, evensongs and concerts and the choir members take an active involvement in community life.
The concert at the Naxxar Parish Church starts at 7.30 pm. Entrance is free and patrons are encouraged to be seated by 7.15 pm.
