Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) students have been informed that they may continue their studies at the Gozo Campus. The news was communicated to the students with an email on Monday.
Monday’s email explained to the students that the following courses will start on the 23rd of September at the Gozo Campus:
- Foundation in Hospitality & Tourism
- Certificate in Food Preparation & Services
Last week, students were informed that the Gozo Campus will not open for the academic year 2019/20. Sources had told Newsbook.com.mt that only eight students applied for the year. Back in 2013, the number of students that applied was 80.
On Saturday, a spokesperson from the Ministry for Gozo told Newsbook.com.mt that they are discussing with the Ministry for Tourism to keep the Gozo Campus open.
A spokesperson from the Ministry for Tourism also confirmed that the campus in Qala will not be closed as the Minister did not accept the management’s proposal to do so.
Newsbook.com.mt contacted the Gozo Tourism Association (GTA) Chief Executive Joe Muscat who stated that the ITS is an important institution for Gozo as the island’s economy is dependent on tourism.
According to Muscat, the Qala premises are well equipped to cater for the instruction of those interested to work in the tourism sector. He added that there needs to be collaboration between all parties so that there is more interest in the courses offered in Qala.
The majority of staff within Gozitan hotels and restaurants is foreign.
